Hostility experienced by LGBT+ people in Italy. An analysis of statistical sources.
Abstract
At the European level, Italy is characterized by taking partial steps toward recognizing the rights and protections reserved for LGBT+ people. Moreover, a still significant proportion of the population does not share the idea that LGBT+ people should have the same rights as heterosexual people, although they often acknowledge that they are discriminated against. In order to promote the full enjoyment of the human rights of LGBT+ people, it is necessary to question the ways in which hostility toward them is manifested. This report aims to shed light on this issue, starting with a reflection that highlights the limitations of some of the concepts most often adopted to describe it, such as homophobia or hate crimes. Then, referring to statistical data recently carried out in Italy, it analyzes the discrimination and victimization suffered by LGBT+ people, highlighting on the one hand its structural dimension and, on the other, the consequences that occur at the individual level.Downloads
